Into the Future

Artwork by Shepard Fairey.
Gatefold Jacket. Clear Speckled Vinyl.

Into The Future is the purest BAD BRAINS recording since the ROIR cassette,” says bassist Darryl Jenifer, referring to the early-’80s sound and energy that defined the band. “This self-produced record shines with a true sense of freedom and musical experimentation, with blends of soulful backgrounds meshed with blistering hardcore and metal riffs, with classic dub.”

“13 new jams that volley between dub-styled reggae and the kind of loud-and-fast hardcore with funk and metal undertones that they’ve been perfecting for ages… Always true to their original vision, Bad Brains continue sailing on.” – All Music Guide

ROIR, 1982 (Recorded 1981)

For fans of hardcore, many would agree that the holy grail of the genre is Bad Brains’ self-titled album, originally released back in 1982 as a cassette-only release on ROIR. Build A Nation
Megaforce, 2007 (Recorded 2004-2007)

Released on June 26, 2007, it was produced by Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys, a longtime friend of the band. This album also celebrates the 30th anniversary of the band. Nearly three years in production, Build a Nation is the first album of original material from Bad Brains since 1995 Bad Brains on Build a Nation, and they rock nearly as hard as they did in their glory days.

Black Dots
Caroline, 1996 (Recorded 1979)

Black Dots is a collection of early songs recorded by Bad Brains. It was recorded at Inner Ear Studios in 1979, which at the time was in Don Zientara’s basement. Nearly all the legendary early hits are here, including “Pay to Cum,” “Don’t Need It,” “Regulator,” “Banned in D.C.,” “How Low Can a Punk Get?” and “Attitude,” while a number of otherwise unheard or never-recorded elsewhere numbers make Black Dots easily the equal of the ROIR cassette. Absolutely necessary for Brains fans or anyone who appreciates the power of live, loud electric music.

Quickness
Caroline, 1989

Quickness is the fourth full-length studio album by hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains. At the time of its release, it was the best selling Bad Brains album and also featured an MTV video for the lead-off track “Soul Craft” directed by Paul Rachman who later went on to produce and direct the feature documentary American Hardcore. The album was a crossover release that contained elements of several genres, including funk, hip hop, heavy metal, punk, and reggae.

Rock for Light
Caroline, 1991 (Recorded 1983)

Rock for Light is the second official full-length album by hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains. It was produced by Ric Ocasek of The Cars. Rock for Light shows the band at the height of its punk energy. “P.M.A.,” “Joshua’s Song,” and “Coptic Times” are typical examples of Bad Brains’ unique blend of punk velocity and Rasta ideology. When they suddenly swing into mellow reggae (on “I and I Survive,” “The Meek,” “Rally ‘Round Jah Throne,” and the dubwise instrumental “Jam”), the effect is like some kind of pleasant musical whiplash.

CD  $12.00

I Against I
SST, 1986

I Against I was for Bad Brains what London Calling was for the Clash €” the band’s first fully mature work, one which successfully brought together all of its diverse influences while at the same time showcasing a singular vision. The album opens with the title track, a blistering and musically exhilarating deploration of violence, and then moves directly into “House of Suffering,” easily the most complex and yet viscerally compelling song the band ever produced. Incredibly tight, funky, and tonally rich interplay between guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jenifer, and drummer Earl Hudson that gives this album its deeply satisfying texture.

Live at CBGB 1982 CD
MVD 2006 (Recorded 1982)

This album captures early Bad Brains (circa their 1982 classic self-titled release) doing what they do best: splitting the set between furious punk-hardcore and cool reggae dubs. Included are simply ferocious readings of “Big Takeover,” “Right Brigade,” “How Low Can a Punk Get,” and “The Regulator,” as well as such reggae tunes as “The Meek” and “I and I Rasta” (the latter of which never appeared on any studio album).

CD $12.00

Live at CBGB 1982 LP
MVD 2010 (Recorded 1982)

Not to be confused with the CD release, LIVE CBGB 1982 this vinyl only release contains audio selections from the DVD release, LIVE CBGB 1982. Sure it sounds confusing, but the material on the CD and LP, while culled from the same series of live shows around Christmas 1982 at CBGBs, is completely different. Besides, who can have enough live stuff from the world’s best hardcore band at the peak of their prowess? This colored vinyl slab comes in a limited edition for indie retail only. Includes blazingly awesome live versions of “FVK,” “How Low Can a Punk Get,” and more.

LP  $13.00

Darryl Jenifer – In Search of Black Judas
ROIR, Oct 26 2010

Darryl Jenifer returns to ROIR, home to the Bad Brains’ legendary debut album, to release his solo debut.

“In Search of Black Judas” blasts off with hardcore riffs and monstrous grooves, delivered with classic Bad Brains fire and fury and the quickness to shift into downtempo reggae passages. It’s a heady and intoxicating mix of sounds that continues a quest for innovation and soulful vibes, anchored by Jenifer’s rock steady lines.

From the stripped down rub-a-dub of “Babylon Leave Me Alone” to the dark and ominous “Trinity Rub”, an excursion into post-punk-dub akin to PIL or The Ruts, Jenifer’s inventive bass builds a rock-steady foundation on each track. “Black Slavery Dayz Mosh” is a charging reggae groove featuring Bad Brain’s vocalist HR’s twisted and treated vocals. With Intricate, spacious and detailed production “In Search of Black Judas” is an aural pleasure and long awaited addition to an already grand legacy.
